Eoreumgol Ice Valley

Known since ancient times as Siryae Bingok, Eoreumgol Ice Valley is located on the mid-slope of the north side of Jaeyaksan in an open-air valley. Ice begins to form in Eoreumgol around early March when the earth's heat gradually increases, and generally persists until mid-July; as the heat of the three hottest months passes and chuseok arrives, the cold air from the rock crevices gradually diminishes. In winter, Eoreumgol is a mysterious region where valley water does not freeze easily and instead warm air above freezing point rises from rock crevices, allowing ferns and moss to maintain their fresh green appearance. From April onward, the clearer the days and the more intense the heat, the more ice forms in the rock crevices and the longer it lasts; in recent years, abnormal weather has brought more rainy days, shortening the period during which ice persists compared to the past, but a refreshingly cool breeze that raises goosebumps continues to blow when entering the valley entrance. The rock crevices where ice forms have an average summer temperature of approximately 0.2 degrees Celsius, and the water flowing through the valley averages 4 to 8 degrees Celsius, making it difficult to endure immersing one's feet in the valley water for more than two minutes. The terrain surrounding Eoreumgol features bizarre rock cliffs spreading like a folding screen around the stone field and valley where ice forms, creating a majestic spectacle that attracts many tourists.
