Wiyangji Pond

Wiyangji is a name given because it was constructed for virtuous people. This name is a recent change, with the original name being Yangyangji. Yangyangji, said to have been constructed during the Silla period, was an irrigation reservoir that supplied water to rice paddies, but it lost its original function when the large Gasan Reservoir was built nearby. However, instead of supplying water to paddies, it now attracts many tourists with its picturesque scenery. As one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Miryang, it is a popular tourist destination, and a grove of Koelreuteria paniculata trees that boasts grand trunks along the reservoir's perimeter displays beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. Spring, when Koelreuteria paniculata flowers bloom profusely as if white snow has fallen, is the height of Wiyangji's beauty. On clear days, the Koelreuteria paniculata flowers reflected in the pond are as beautiful as a watercolour painting. Since ancient times, Koelreuteria paniculata has been known as a tree that foretells a bumper harvest for the year, as its full blossoms resemble white rice. Surrounded by a lush forest of magnificent weeping willows and pine trees, beautiful ambience can be enjoyed throughout the year, and Wanjaejeong, a pavilion built in 1900 on an island in the pond and owned by the Andong Kwon clan, adds East Asian beauty.
