Yeongnamnu Pavilion

Located on Adongsan Mountain beside the Namcheon River in Milyang, Yeongnamnu Pavilion is counted among Korea's three greatest pavilions as a National Treasure, alongside Chokseokru in Jinju and Bubyeokru in Pyongyang. This massive two-storey pavilion features an eight-sloped roof spanning five bays east to west and four bays north to south, with two subsidiary pavilions flanking it on either side, and was originally a small pavilion attached to Yeongnamsa Temple, one of five famous temples of Silla. After Yeongnamsa Temple fell into disuse, records indicate that the existing pavilion was demolished during the reign of Goryeo's King Gongmin and rebuilt on a larger scale, though the current structure was reconstructed in 1884 by Milyang's provincial governor Yi In-jae. The complex includes subsidiary buildings such as Neungpagak, Chimryugak, Sajumun, Iljumun and Cheonijingung, and the pavilion itself displays numerous plaques bearing works by celebrated calligraphers of the era that illuminate the flow of history, while stone flowers paved in the courtyard also capture visitors' attention. The pavilion and Chimryugak are connected by a crescent-moon-shaped stepped passage, a distinctive architectural feature that enhances the building's composition and layout, and through its grand architectural character it demonstrates both confident and picturesque beauty. Additionally, positioned on a cliff overlooking the Milyanggang River and casting an imposing shadow, the pavilion's scenic beauty is such that it was selected as one of the Sixteen Scenic Sites of Joseon when the Japanese Government-General of Chosun designated these sites in 1931.
