Bokcheon-dong Ancient Tombs

The Bokcheon-dong Ancient Tombs are burial mounds from the Gaya period located on hills in the Bokcheon-dong area of Busan. Excavation surveys conducted over several periods have confirmed around 40 tombs, though the majority remain underground. The tombs take various forms, including wooden-coffin tombs with wooden caskets placed in wide chambers dug into the earth, pit-style stone-chamber tombs constructed with rectangular stone walls and stone ceilings built underground, and log-coffin tombs with bodies buried directly in the soil. The site is also known as the Haksoedae Tumuli, named after the original name of the hill. Following the initial excavation of around 10 tombs by Dong-A University, Busan University excavated three tombs on the eastern slope of the hill in 1974. Subsequently, over 100 tombs in the tumuli group were excavated and surveyed by Busan University Museum and Busan City Museum. Many of these tombs were undisturbed, yielding diverse relics. Pottery including pedestal dishes, neck jars, and clay oil lamps are characteristic ceramics of the lower Nakdong River region. Various iron armour and helmets were also excavated.
