Dongnae Eupseong Fortress Site

Dongnae Eupseong Fortress Site is a representative walled town that combines the advantages of both mountain and flatland fortifications, constructed across hillside terrain extending from the back of Chungryeol Shrine, where the Eastern Bastion stands, through Maan Mountain to the back of Dongnae Hyanggyo, where the Western Bastion is located, and including part of the flat terrain of the present-day Dongnae city center. After lying abandoned following the Imjin War, the fortress was rebuilt in 1731 (the 7th year of King Yeongjo's reign) by Dongnae Prefect Jeong Eon-seop, who recognised the strategic importance of Dongnae as a gateway to the nation and constructed a walled town considerably larger in scale than that of the Imjin War period; this fortress built at that time is the origin of Dongnae Eupseong whose traces remain to this day. The walls of Dongnae Eupseong were restored by laying new bricks over the old ones, and there is pleasure in walking along the fortifications and comparing the weathered old bricks with the gleaming new ones. This is a place where the history and suffering of Dongnae can be felt throughout the leisurely and serene walking path that overflows with ease and tranquility.
