Geumjeongsan Mountain

Geumjeongsan National Geopark is a mountain forming the root of Busan's terrain, created by the uplift of granite that formed approximately 70 million years ago when magma cooled beneath the earth's surface. Over long periods of time, erosion by rain and wind has carved and shaped it, allowing visitors to appreciate elegant granite landforms such as rock cliffs, tors, namas, inselbergs, and blockstreams. Fortresses have been constructed on most of the mountain peaks and ridges, including Godangbong, the main peak of Geumjeongsan, as well as Janggunbong, Wonhyobong, and Sanghakbong, and the ridges connecting these peaks. On these peaks and ridges, numerous tors, which are distinctive boulder field landforms, are observed due to the exposure of large and small bedrock of Cretaceous Bulguksa granite. The geology composing Geumjeongsan consists of the Gyeongsang Series sedimentary rock layers, the volcanic rocks that intruded or erupted into them, and the Bulguksa granite and Masan rock that subsequently intruded into these rocks. Registered as a national geopark, Geumjeongsan is a place where strange and magnificent rocks and nature blend well together to showcase beautiful scenery.
