Choryang 168 Stairs is the shortest shortcut to descend from the sanbok-doro to Busan Port. It is one of the representative features of sanbok-doro—a vertiginous staircase running vertically to a height of 6 stories above ground. The staircase comprises 168 steps, and there are said to have originally been 3 wells at the bottom of the stairs. Currently, only 1 well remains, which was formerly used for drinking water, and one can imagine people standing in long queues to collect water during times of water scarcity. It is said to have been a gathering place where people of all ages and both genders would meet, carrying water jars and water-bearing frames, and was the source from which rumours spread.
