Gadeokdo Daehang Port Battery Cave

Towards the end of World War II, as Japanese military strength declined rapidly, the Japanese military constructed defensive facilities around Busan and its surrounding coastline in preparation for a US amphibious landing operation, and the artificial caves in the Daehang village of Gadeokdo appear to have been created under these circumstances. Currently, approximately 10 artificial caves have been discovered in Daehang, Gadeokdo, and it is said they were made by bringing in coal mine workers. The caves take various forms including I-shaped, T-shaped, and L-shaped tunnels as well as connected dual caves, and some are so long that their internal passages are interwoven in a cross pattern. Sculptural installations inside the caves express the conditions of that period in an easy-to-understand manner, making this a place where one can retrace the footprints of a painful chapter of history.
