Gamcheon Culture Village

Gamcheon Culture Village began in the 1950s as a livelihood for refugees fleeing the Korean War and preserves Busan's history up to the present day. The terraced residential structures arranged orderly along the mountainside and the labyrinthine alleyways through which all paths lead demonstrate Gamcheon's unique character. Once a neglected poor neighbourhood in Busan, it underwent urban regeneration projects incorporating culture and arts, and has now become a representative tourist attraction visited by 1.85 million domestic and international tourists annually. With beautiful pastel-coloured houses built in terraces along the hillside and maze-like alleyways, it is called the Korean Machu Picchu and Santorini. In 2016, it received the Presidential Award, the highest honour at the Republic of Korea Space Culture Awards. At Gamcheon Culture Village, visitors can enjoy picturesque village scenery harmonising with beautiful nature, appreciate various forms of artwork installed throughout the alleyways, and experience diverse crafts through studios of resident artists in the village, drawing continuous streams of tourists.
