Geumjeong Fortress

Geumjeong Fortress is constructed along the ridges and valleys following the summit of Geumjeong Mountain. Geumjeong Fortress is a refuge and anti-war fortress built by the residents of Dongnae to prepare for upheaval after suffering severe damage during the Japanese invasions of the late 16th century, and it is the largest-scale fortress in the country. In 1707, Han Bae-ha, the governor of Dongnae, built an inner fortress dividing the area into northern and southern sections, citing the fortress's vast expanse, and supplemented it with facilities such as command posts and military arsenals. In 1806, O Han-won, the governor of Dongnae, repaired the fortress, newly constructed the east gate, built gate towers at the west, south and north gates, and stationed guards. A fortress village has been developed within Geumjeong Fortress, and Sanseong makgeolli, Korea's traditional folk rice wine, is produced in the fortress village; with various restaurants and cafés, it is a popular tourist destination offering a pleasant place for visitors to rest. To ascend Geumjeong Fortress, one can use a private vehicle or take a public bus.
