Yeonsan-dong Ancient Tombs

The Yeonsan-dong Ancient Tombs were designated as a Busan Metropolitan City Historic Monument on 26 June 1972, and were elevated to the status of Historic Site on 30 June 2017. The Yeonsan-dong Ancient Tombs are a Three Kingdoms period burial ground constructed in the latter half of the 5th century to the first half of the 6th century, with 18 mound tombs arranged in a single line along the ridge of a gentle slope descending northward from Baesan, and approximately 1,000 ancient tombs distributed on the sloped terrain. As a result of excavation work conducted from 1987 onward, the largest sunken-style stone-chamber tomb among the Three Kingdoms period burial grounds distributed in the Yeongnam region investigated to date has been identified. The Yeonsan-dong Ancient Tombs are of high value for understanding Three Kingdoms period tomb construction techniques, as they exhibit the characteristics of both Silla and Gaya tomb construction, and the excavated artefacts include both those showing characteristics unique to the Busan region and those displaying Silla characteristics, making them an important site for research into the ancient history and culture of Busan and the Yeongnam region in the 5th and 6th centuries.
